    History & Tradition

Mykonos, a child of the King of Delos, is credited for the island's name. In reality, there are many connections between the ancient histories of Mykonos and nearby Delos. In one of his twelve duties, Hercules fought the Giants, and after killing them, he tossed their bodies into the sea, where their bodies petrified and grew into enormous boulders, becoming the land of Mykonos. Famous artists, politicians, and elite Europeans started taking holidays on the island in the 1930s, and Mykonos swiftly gained popularity on a global scale. Tourists returned to Mykonos' wealthy coastlines in the 1950s after being partially banned during World War 2, and they haven't stopped coming since.

    Must Places to Visit

    Kato Mili Windmills

The windmills in Mykonos are one of the island's distinguishing features and are visible from almost anywhere in Mykonos Town. A series of four windmills known as the renowned Kato Mili can be seen in Chora, perched magnificently on a hilltop with a sea view. The three-story windmills, which were constructed by the Venetians in the 1600s, are covered with wood and straw. They were mainly used to grind wheat, but over time, as their use dwindled, they eventually ceased to exist in the middle of the 20th century.

    Panagia Paraportiani

The Panagia Paraportiani Church in the Kastro neighborhood is one of Mykonos' most popular picture locations. Five tiny churches that are either stacked on top of or alongside each other make up the actual church. The churches of Saints Anargyros, Sozon, and Anastasia encircle the church of Saint Efstathios, which stands in the center of the complex.
On top of the remaining four is the Virgin Mary's dome-shaped church. The latter churches were constructed in the 16th and 17th centuries, with the exception of Saint Anargyros, which was constructed in the 14th century.

    Armenistis Lighthouse

Due to the British steamer Volta's disaster off the island's north shore in 1887, the Armenistis lighthouse was constructed in 1891. The 19-meter lighthouse, which serves as a guide for approaching ships, was constructed in an effort to prevent another catastrophe of this nature. Its lofty location over the Aegean Sea provides beautiful views, especially stunning after dusk.

    Little Venice

One of the most stunning locations on the island, Little Venice, is the place to go if you're looking for some romantic moments on Mykonos. The shoreline is lined with medieval two- and three-story homes, many of which have wooden balconies that dangle over the lake. These dwellings, which were once owned by wealthy local captains or merchants, have little basement doors that offered access to the sea and storage spaces below.

    Archaeological Museum

Initially constructed in the early 20th century to exhibit the artifacts, including sculptures and tombs, discovered during the excavations on the island of Rineia. The structure presently includes six chambers that house more artifacts from significant historical digs on Mykonos. Vases, jewelry, pottery, and sculptures made of marble and clay are all part of the collection. The vase depicting a Trojan horse, which dates to the seventh century BC and was found on Mykonos in 1961, is the most well-known object in the collection.
