    A stunning geological wonder can be found just 40 kilometers outside of Mani if you travel there. It's amazing to see the limestone formations that have been sculpted by the torrents of water that have descended from the mountains. The hike begins at the peaks of Taugetos and ends at the beach of Sandova, just outside Kalamata. Along the way, the gorge becomes incredibly narrow, measuring only two meters wide, yet towering 60 meters high. The experience of trekking through this stretch is truly unforgettable.

    The towers of Mani

    The Towers of Mani are a unique feature of the Mani region of Greece. These defensive structures were built by the Maniotes, the inhabitants of Mani, in the 16th century. The towers served as a means of protection against pirate raids and foreign invasions. The towers are typically made of stone and can reach up to several stories high. They have a characteristic rectangular shape and often have small openings for firearms.     Cape Tainaron

According to legend, the ancient ancestors believed that the gates of Hades, the underworld, were located there. The famous demigod Heracles is said to have brought Cerberus, the three-headed dog who guards the underworld, from this location. Archaeological findings, such as building materials and carvings discovered in a nearby cave, suggest that the cave of Tainaros was once a site for chthonic cults, particularly for the worship of Poseidon. On Maundy Thursday, every woman in the household begins preparing Easter buns made from a special dough with seven layers for each member of the family, as well as friends and relatives, even those who have moved away.     Marriage and Dowry

    Marriage and dowry customs in Mani have a strong tradition and involve a lot of preparation. In preparation for the wedding, all the relatives from all the villages were notified well in advance. The groom's house was repaired and whitewashed. All the girls, relatives and friends were enlisted to grind the wheat and make the wedding breads for the guests. In terms of dowry, the bride typically received various fields and land, called lachidia, as well as household items such as utensils, clothes, blankets and more. It was also common for the bride to receive old coins of value, usually silver, pinned to boxes and decorated with ribbons. These customs emphasize on the bride's contribution to her new home, and the importance of family and community in Mani.

    Diples

    Diples is a traditional delicacy of Mani. It is a pastry made from wheat flour, shaped into different forms such as spiral or folded into a V shape, and deep-fried to a crisp. This sweet treat is a staple in Messinian cuisine and has gained popularity beyond the region. It is traditionally flavored with cinnamon and sweetened with honey, and sometimes they are also filled with ground nuts such as walnuts or almonds.
